Museums

Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre

The Museum of Nature and Man (MNH) is housed in an emblematic building in the island capital: the Former Civil Hospital, an outstanding example of the islands' Neoclassical architecture. Its renovation scheme sought a spatial balance between the areas intended for exhibitions and those aimed at other cultural and leisure uses (documentation centre and library, multi-use room, restaurant, shop, courtyard and gardens, etc.).On one hand, this museum allows visitors to find out about the natural wealth of the Canary Islands and, on the other, to discover the largest existing collection related to the culture of the Guanche, the aboriginal people who lived on the island of Tenerife before the arrival of the first European conquerors.

TEA Museum of Modern Art

TEA, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (Tenerife Arts' Space), a project promoted by the Cabildo of Tenerife (Tenerife's Island Government), is the work of architects Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron and Virgilio Gutiérrez. In this new, cultural building covering 20,622 square metres there is the Óscar Domínguez Institute; the Island of Tenerife's Photographic Centre and a library, part of the island's library network. It is located in the renovated historical centre of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the right-hand side of the Barranco de Santos, between the Recova Market and the Concepción Church, next to the Museum of Natural History and Man. Its design favours openness to the outside for its interior areas, providing light and dynamism to the whole complex with its 1200 glass blocks with 720 different shapes and sizes. The centre also has various common areas: an events hall, shop, cafeteria, a semi-covered plaza and two exhibition halls. In one, there is the permanent exhibition of Óscar Domínguez and in the other a temporary exhibition.

Museo Militar

This museum, set up in 1988 in the headquarters of Almeida, shows visitors all objects related to the military history of the Canary Islands. The most unique piece is undoubtedly the "El Tigre" cannon, which according to tradition took Admiral Nelson's right arm when he tried to invade the city (Heroic Deed of July 25, 1797). Also the museum shows uniforms and personal belongings of famous military men and scaled models of old military buildings. It can be considered as one of the best research centres of Canarian historical cartography.

Places of interest

Playa de las Teresitas

In my opinion the best seaside of the island.

20 minutes from MV32 Apartment and 15 minutes from LR81 by car, you can reach it also by bus, 910 from Av. Francisco la Roche for LR81 and from MV32 by tramway to bus station and then the 910 bus.

Parque García Sanabria

This park is one of the most emblematic symbols of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Surrounded by tropical flowers, you will discover sculptures hidden among the trees and feel the warm rays of the sun peeking through the lush vegetation. This is something you really don't want to just hear about from somebody else - you must experience it for yourself.

Covering an expanse of 67,230 square metres (about 17 acres), the García Sanabria park houses plenty of sculptures of great artistic value, some of which were on display at the 1st International Street Sculpture Exhibition by artists such as Pablo Serrano and José Guinovart, as well as busts of some of the city's most illustrious figures, and a whole array of tropical trees and plants.

At the heart of the park stands the Monument to García Sanabria (1938), which was made by the sculptor Francisco Borges Salas and designed by the architect Marrero Regalado. Beside it is the statue of La Fecundidad (meaning The Fertility), by the same sculpto

Plaza de España y Alameda

This is the largest square in the city and it was built in 1929 where the castle of San Cristóbal used to stand. It lies in-between Calle del Castillo and the port, by Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena. The square was revamped recently by the architects Herzog & de Meuron to include a pond and several pavilions. Opposite the square are the offices of Tenerife's Regional Council.

Auditorio Adán Martín

The Auditorio de Tenerife is a spectacular building, more similar to a dynamic sculpture than a merely functional building. It's "wing" stands out at first sight, with which it's creator, Santiago Calatrava, seems to defy the laws of gravity.

This emblematic auditorium offers unique spaces, and is, at the same time, the perfect setting for the promotion of prestigious products.

For those looking for an exceptional setting, the Auditorio de Tenerife offers a variety of spaces, icluding its' two halls, the Main or Symphonic Hall, and the Chamber Music Hall, both very versatile and technically fully equipped for product presentations. It has an impressive 1200 m2 open Main Hall, accessible from both sides of the building. The press room, shop and main cafeteria can be found here.

Level 2 of the building has two spacious terraces joined by side passageways, as well as two outdoor plazas. One of these plazas has an impressive view of the ocean, just a few meters away.

The Auditorio de Tenerife also has 12 single dressing rooms and 12 group dressing rooms, a hairdressing room, a make-up room, a costume department, etc. It also has an internal cafeteria for personnel, two support bars, and an outdoor cafeteria on the level 2 outdoor terrace.

Parque Marítimo

The César Manrique Maritime Park is a complex of 22,000 m2 located on the south coast of Tenerife's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with unbeatable views of the Tenerife Auditorium, designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Palmetum botanical garden and the sea. With easy access by car and public transport, this leisure center has a large parking area. In addition to its 3 saltwater swimming pools it has catering services, shops, changing rooms, playroom, showers and gym as well as sunbeds and sunshades rental services.

Eating & Drinking

Bars and Pubs

On the lookout for some of the best Santa Cruz bars? Consider this little guide our gift to you. Positively brimming with hangouts that serve great drinks, we've narrowed down our favourite bars in the Capital of the Island to these chosen few.

Calle la Noria                                                                 The best place to head for lively bars is thetrendy Noria District on Calle la Noria which runs from the church of La Concepción to the viaduct and is lined with restaurants, chill out bars and roof terraces with live bands. Favourites amongst them are Bulán Restaurant and Chill Out, Los Reunidos and the famous J C Murphy's Bar alongside the church tower.

Avenida Anaga                                                       Probably the main area of the night life in Santa Cruz. Barbas Bar & Saloon, El Hombre Bala, Lone Star and many others for every taste.

Chapatal

Close to the Parque la Granja, it's an area with a lot of bars with terrace, not so touristic, nice and cheap.

Pub El Otro

Calle Doctor Guigou/Calle San Antonio

An original and easy at the same time music pub, with really good music, from '80 Spanish to last world hits.

Strasse Park

Rambla de Santa Cruz 95

Parque Garcia Sanabria  Awesome location, between the Parque García  Sanabria and the Ramblas de Santa Cruz. Elegant  and enjoyable, Strasse Park should be able to entice many of the in crowd with its imaginative main meals like chicken satay with rice and coco curry or Wok carne fiesta with mole and lemon salsa.

Kocora Café

Avenida Madrid

Very popular, like the other clubs in the area, all with large outdoor terraces, where you can enjoy a beer or a cocktail in total relax.

Restaurants

It's a bit difficult to suggest a restaurant, the taste is the most subjective. I hope you consider the possibility that my opinion could be different from your. I'll try to write about different styles and tastes, however I advise you to have a look to Trip Advisor reviews.  The prices I indicate are riferred to a main dish with a cup of wine or a couple of beers

TASCA LA TATA                                                         This is the first because of its proximity to the apartment. The suggestion for this restaurant is "The salads" but all dishes are prepared with fresh ingredients and well design. The range of price per person is 20/30€

Glorieta Arquitecto Marrero Regalado, 6

EL PORTÓN DE ORO                                                   If you are hungry go to "El Portón" you will come out definitely satiated. Traditional Spanish (Galician) cuisine. One of mine favourite! It is divided in Restaurant (on the left) and Tasca (on the right). The range of price per person is 20-25€ but the lunch menu at the tasca costs 11€

Calle Dr. Guigou, 18

EL PUNTERO                                                                An old and tipical Restaurant specialized in fresh fish. For me the best "Octopus" in Tenerife, really delicious. The range of price per person is 15-20€  (P.S. The bath is "original"!)

Calle San Clemente, 13

RESTAURANTE PLAZA 18

In a big pedestrian area, with a wide Terrace you can find the tradicion of Canarian Cuisine mixed with Spanish. The range of price per person is 20-25€

Calle San Francisco, 18

MESÓN LOS ANGELES

A classical Spanish Restaurant with a high quality of food. The range of price per person is 30-35€ but you can purchase a discount simply booking a table on "The Fork" App or Website.

Av. Islas Canarias, 28

TABERNA RAMÓN

Probably the most famous restaurant of Santa Cruz, quite similar to Mesón Los Angeles. Usually very crowded and with not too space around the tabels, but the food served is very very good! Closed on Sunday

Rambla de Santa Cruz, 56

EL CAPRICHO DE NICOMEDE

Fresh sea food and fish. Very nice terrace. Price Mediumu/Hight.

Avda . Francisco La Roche 1

GUACHINCHE CHONA

It's a really seample and easy site where you can try tipicall canarian dishes as "huevos a la estampida" (eggs  with  fries and a kind of eggs with french fries and sausage), fried rabbit, goat meat as example.

Price 15/20€
